Assessment Objectives

A01- Key concepts:
I am quite confident with the objective as we went through it in detail last year, however going to do a more detailed analysis of the clips from my chosen text and for other related texts.

A02: Wider contexts (shep):
I am going to use interenet websites such as Media Guardian and find out in detail the shep of my text. I need to research each point thoroughly and put my analysis up on my blog.

A03.1: Issues, debates and theories
I have chosen a number of different theorists already but i am going to research on the interent new theoriests and theories i can use.

A03.2: compare and account the similarities and differences
To make this objective stronger i am going to compare and analyse atleast two texts a week. I will use other objectives to help support my arguement.

A05: research techniques:
To achieve this assessment i will look at different mediums to help find information on my text. I will use different sources such as the internet, books etc.

Does The Media Influence Teenage Girls..? (Research)

Below is a link that i found on one of the most watched childrens news programme Newsround. The link is off a short article crticising the media and supporting my arguement that off whether or not the media influences the way teenage girls look in society today.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/sci_tech/newsid_2194000/2194827.stm

Agree or Disagree
I Agree With the above as it supports my arguement and clearly states that the media influences young teenage girls. It clearly states that it puts pressure on girls to look a specific way.

'The media is generally held responsible for the growth in teenage dieting.'

Media Audiences

Ugly betty is a programme that appeals to a number of different people, but it's main target audience is young females, as Betty is the protogonist of the show. By having Betty as the heroin it allows the females to identify with the character. As the text deals with contemporay issues such as sexuality, image, relationships etc Ugly Betty is also shown to be aimed at teenagers. After watching it several times i have concluded thay above all the main primary audience is still young women as it mainly focuses on fashion, and the term fashion is related to young women as they tend to follow the trends and they are seen to be more image obsessed too.

Ugly Betty also aims at different ethnic groups and not just white men and women. The reason why i have come to this conclusion is because Betty Suarez herself comes from an ethnic minorty group as she is Latino and not white. This may wider the audience that watch it becase other latino's may be able to relate to her. It will also mean that it will attract more Americans as the number of latino's situated in America has increased.

I think that anyone can see that ugly betty is aimed at a diverse audience as instead of having one certain type a characters they have a number of different characters for example they have Marc who is a homosexual, William who is a geek, Betty who is latino etc. This is good for the producers as it will attract a wider audience and is important as it reflects the zeitgeist (the spirit of the time) as it touches upon contemporary issues within society and shows society how it is now.

As Ugly Betty is aired after 9 o'clock; after watershed, it allowed me to decide that its targeted age group is 16+. This is because programmes that are aired after watershed contain scences of a explicit sexual nature, which is not suitable for individuals who are younger than the age of 16. It is also made quite obvious that its aimed at this age group as the producers of ugly Betty repeat the episode that are shown on friday. The reason why i say this is that the producers have taken into account that youngsters tend to go out on friday nights therefore meaning that they miss the show but can catch up with what they missed on the following day on T4 a programme that is aired on Channel 4.
